FAQ
Questions people ask before booking
If your question isn't answered here, bring it to your free consultation call — or email me directly.
How do virtual sessions work?
Sessions are held by secure video through the Jane platform. You'll get a link by email before each appointment — just click it at your session time from anywhere in Ontario where you have privacy and an internet connection.
What happens in the free consultation?
It's a short, relaxed phone or video call. You tell me a little about what's bringing you to therapy, ask anything you'd like, and we both get a sense of whether we're a good fit. There's no obligation to book anything afterward.
Do I need a doctor's referral?
No referral is needed. You can book a consultation directly. If you plan to use extended health benefits, your insurer may have its own requirements — check your plan or ask me during the consultation.
Is therapy covered by insurance?
Most extended health benefits plans cover services by a Registered Psychotherapist. You'll receive an official receipt after each session to submit for reimbursement. Sessions are 50 minutes at $145.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you're working through and what you want from therapy. Some people find a handful of sessions is enough; others value longer-term work.
Is what I say confidential?
Yes, with a few specific legal exceptions (such as risk of serious harm to yourself or others, or court orders). Confidentiality and its limits are explained fully before we begin, and you're welcome to ask about it at any time.
What if I'm in crisis right now?
Therapy is not an emergency service. If you're in immediate danger, call 911. If you're experiencing a mental health crisis, call or text 988 (the Suicide Crisis Helpline) or go to your nearest emergency department.
Do I have to live in Ontario?
Yes. I'm registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, which means I can only provide sessions to people who are physically located in Ontario at the time of the appointment. You can be anywhere in the province — from Toronto to Thunder Bay to a cottage up north.
Do you offer in-person sessions?
All of my sessions are held virtually by secure video. This lets me support people right across Ontario, and most clients find that meeting from their own comfortable space makes it easier to open up.
What technology do I need for a virtual session?
Just a device with a camera and microphone — a phone, tablet, or laptop all work — and an internet connection. You'll receive a link by email; click it at your session time. Headphones are a nice touch for privacy, and a space where you won't be interrupted helps you get the most from the hour.
Is virtual therapy as helpful as meeting in person?
For most concerns, yes — research consistently shows that video-based psychotherapy can be just as helpful as in-person work. That said, fit matters more than format. If you try it and feel it isn't working for you, say so; we can talk honestly about what you need, and I can point you toward other options if in-person care would serve you better.
I've never been to therapy before. What does a first session look like?
The first session is mostly about getting to know each other. We'll talk about what's bringing you to therapy now, a bit of your history, and what you're hoping might be different. There's no pressure to have it figured out or to tell me everything at once — we go at your pace, and you're welcome to ask questions any time.
What if I don't know what to talk about?
That's very common, and it's completely okay. You don't need to arrive with an agenda. Many sessions start with whatever is on your mind that day, and we follow what matters together. Not knowing where to begin is often exactly the right place to begin.
Do you prescribe medication?
No. Psychotherapists provide talk therapy and do not prescribe. If you're wondering whether medication might be part of your care, your family doctor or a psychiatrist can help with that — and therapy can work well alongside it.
How do I get started?
The easiest first step is the free consultation call. You can book it directly through my online booking page, or email me at info@klcounsellingservices.ca and we'll find a time. No referral is needed.
